gpuix in the terminal
Can a terminal show a real GUI for servers and coding agents? Yes, with limits.
What the post says
Tommy Rossi (@__morse) ships gpuix 0.11.0. gpuix lets you write React or Solid and paint it with Zed's GPUI renderer. There is no Electron and no web view.
The new option render(<App/>, { terminal: true }) (or GPUIX_TERMINAL=1) draws the same app inside the terminal as pixels. It is not text art.
How it works
Limits
| Item | Status |
|---|---|
| Terminals | kitty and Ghostty only. WezTerm untested. Terminal.app and iTerm2 do not work |
| OS | macOS and Linux. Windows fails |
| SSH | Works. ssh -t server 'GPUIX_TERMINAL=1 bun app.tsx'. Fewer frames on a slow link |
| tmux | Not supported |
| Server | Needs a GPU or software render path (Metal or wgpu) |
| Maturity | Before 1.0. Pin versions |
For Allternit
- Server dashboards over SSH: good fit. Write a small React panel that runs on a VPS and opens in Ghostty over SSH. No web port and no auth layer.
- Coding agents: this does not make Claude Code or gizzi a GUI. Each app must be written for gpuix. Gizzi's TUI would need a rewrite to use it.
- Risk: headless Linux VPS without a GPU is not confirmed. Test one box first.
